"This brief story is about Dr. Hellickson, but it must begin with my early lack of good dental hygiene. The care of teeth when I was born eighty-two years ago was not a major concern to many people. My first tooth brush was given to me when I was about seven years old during the great depression. We kids pulled out own baby teeth when they came loose. We put the tooth underneath our pillow at night, and the next morning the tooth would be gone, and replaced by a penny. Do kids still do that? I was in my mid teens when I had my first visit to the dentist, and there were many different dentist after that. They probably were all good dentists for their time, but the technology had not advanced to our present standards. When I was forty four years old in 1971 my teeth were deteriorating, some were missing, and I had periodontal disease. The periodontist cured the problem with my gums and introduced me to Dr. Hellickson in 1972.
Dr. Hellickson indeed had a challenge to repair and restructure the teeth in my mouth. I ended up with bridges, implants, a partial denture and all teeth crowned. These changes did not occur overnight, and after many visits to his office I acquired considerable respect for Dr. Hellickson. During the following thirty seven years he has maintained my teeth in excellent condition. He did say that I had to cooperate and do my part. I immediately began flossing. It is difficult to imagine now, but I did not floss my teeth before 1972. Since that time I have added Hydro-Floss and tongue cleaner to my dental hygiene tools, fluoridex toothpaste for my one out of three daily tooth brushings and “ACT Restoring” Fluoride mouth was at bedtime.
Dental state of the art has also changed during my thirty seven years with Dr. Hellickson, and he has changed with it. The dental office has an advanced x-ray system. They have added a procedure for applying fluoride directly to the teeth on a semi annual basis. The entire inside of my mouth and tongue is examined semi annually to determine its condition of health. Perhaps there are many other changes that I am not aware of. Dr. Hellickson’s dental hygiene staff is also highly proficient. During my recent visit to the dental office, the hygienist discovered a problem on the inside of number four upper right tooth. The anomaly initially appeared to be stain, but further investigation suggested a possible very small cavity. I can not remember when I had my last cavity. Next an example of modern dental equipment appeared. A small probe (perhaps it was a fiber optic camera) was aimed at the anomaly. The image was magnified and appeared on a computer screen. The hygienist, Jane, showed the image to me. Dr. Hellickson agreed that it was a cavity and filled the small hole. Thank you Dr. Hellickson for a superb job in providing my dental care."

"It was 20-25 years ago I met Dr. Hellickson. I had a partial anchored to my remaining 4 teeth. I knew it wouldn’t be long that I’d have a denture and I didn’t want that. We’ve all seen the many people with loose wobbly dentures. One evening I saw a bit on how Dr. Hellickson was doing implants. I went to see him. Soon I had a full lower denture and could eat anything. For the record I would like you to know how pleased I am with my beautiful new teeth. Some 15 years after the initial implants, I recently had both overdentures (lower fixed, upper removable) replaced. The procedure was pretty straightforward requiring four to six visits, and produced some praiseworthy results.
Not only do I have a great new smile, I immediately noticed a difference in chewing. It was like newly sharpened chef’s knives slicing through my food.
