Advantages of Cosmetic Fillings
When left unchecked, decay weakens your tooth structure, resulting in cavity formation. If the damage is limited, it is possible to repair using a cosmetic filling. This is a conservative plan for restoring your decaying tooth, helping to preserve what is remaining of your tooth and simultaneously transform your smile. The cosmetic filling, made out of strong and durable composite plastic resin, is a beautiful alternative to the traditional silver amalgam filling. Unlike amalgam fillings, which are metallic and immediately visible to the eye as a foreign object, cosmetic fillings match the tooth’s natural color. When done properly, they are essentially invisible to the observer, making them the preferred aesthetic option.
The decaying tooth structure is known as a cavity. To fix it, we remove the section of your tooth that is weakened by decay and replace it with layers of composite resin. These layers of resin constitute the filling. We use composite plastic resin fillings instead of amalgams for a number of reasons. One, as already mentioned, they are more aesthetically pleasing. Two, amalgam fillings tend to have high mercury content. Some studies indicate that the mercury contained in dental fillings can enter the rest of the body. Mercury poisoning could result, and obviously gives cause for concern. Three, silver fillings also expand over time frequently causing teeth to fracture and break. Breakage can lead to root canals, crowns and possibly the loss of a tooth. Finally, leaking and corrosion are also risks that can occur with amalgam fillings.
Given the risks associated with amalgam fillings, you may choose to remove them and replace with cosmetic fillings. If your tooth does not need extensive work, then this can be done in a one-visit procedure. After removal of the amalgam filling, we prepare the tooth for bonding with the cosmetic filling. We then apply the flexible plastic resin in layers, using a high intensity light to harden each one. The resulting composite filling is durable, beautiful and will make you thankful that you opted for cosmetic fillings.
